Step Three: Use the Reference Speed
During play, use the reference speed as a starting point from which to make minor adjustments to match the present green speeds & contoured green surfaces.
Example: On level green speeds faster than your reference speed, putt slightly softer than the reference speed. For uphill or downhill putts, adjust similarly. Golf Digest article

Step Four: Learn Different Speeds & Distances
Measure and practice your the golf course's practice green before you play! Learn its speed and practice making adjustments from your reference speed.
Remember: Apply the drills to any new speed you measure to learn that speed.

Step Five: Learn the Enviromental Factors
Learn the effects of weather, time of day, grass type, grain direction, irrigation, and more. Practice the drills on different days and learn how these factors change green speeds daily. Review the advanced golf tips for more.
